Cancer incidence among firefighters

A recent journal article of interest from International Archives of Occupational and Environmental Health, (Vol. 93, Issue 2)

Cancer incidence among firefighters

Given the recent fires here in Australia, there is increased interest in the health impacts of work in firefighters. This recent study by Carolina Bigert and colleagues looks at the incidence of cancers in Swedish firefighters - and demonstrated a possible risk of non-melanoma skin cancer.

Unfortunately, we are limited in applying the results to Australia due to potential differences in OHS regulations, work activities, schedules, PPE used; as well as whether health surveillance was carried out.

If you are contemplating assessing health risks or need advice designing a health assessment for your workforce, our Occupational and Environmental Physicians provide expert consultancy services.
