Telehealth Transformation in Occupational Medicine
The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically accelerated the adoption of telemedicine across all healthcare sectors. GP clinics, allied health professionals, and medical specialists rapidly transitioned to virtual services—and occupational medicine was no exception. But at Phoenix Occupational Medicine, telehealth has been part of our service model long before the pandemic hit.
With operational continuity becoming more critical than ever, our occupational telemedicine service ensures timely care for injured or ill workers—without compromising quality, access, or safety.
Why Occupational Telemedicine Matters
Even as some sectors paused during lockdowns, many essential industries continued—and so did workplace injuries and health concerns. Occupational telemedicine allows employers to ensure health issues are managed promptly, supporting early intervention, workforce confidence, and efficient return to work.
As Dr Brett Shannon stated:
“The main benefit of telemedicine is that we can provide almost instant review post-injury and immediate advice to both the worker and the workplace.”
This rapid response prevents injuries from worsening and maintains productivity.
Common Conditions Managed Through Telehealth
Our occupational telemedicine clinic supports diagnosis, reassurance, and care navigation for a wide range of conditions:
- Skin issues: rashes, burns, contact dermatitis
- Musculoskeletal concerns: carpal tunnel syndrome, sprains, repetitive strain
- Respiratory conditions: asthma, upper respiratory tract infections
- Heat illness and chemical exposures
- Mental health support and early stress management
Teleconsultations often reduce anxiety by offering prompt guidance and facilitating timely referrals for further treatment where needed.
Seamless Integration with Face-to-Face Care
Not all cases are suited for virtual care. That’s why our telemedicine system includes built-in triage for face-to-face referral. Whether it’s a visit to our Brisbane clinic, a referral to a physiotherapist, or coordination with a GP or specialist, our physicians ensure workers are connected with the right support.
“Where needed, we link in the right clinical services—safely and quickly,” says Dr Sabrina Virji, Registrar at Phoenix Occupational Medicine.
Supporting Workers and Workplaces Through Collaboration
Occupational telemedicine isn’t about replacing a worker’s usual doctor. As Dr Sid O’Toole, OEP, explains:
“Our value lies in supporting the GP, the worker, and the employer with workplace-specific medical advice. We’re an extension of the care team.”
We also partner with GPs in regional areas, ensuring continuity of care for workers in remote or underserved locations.
