Who is an Occupational and Environmental Physician?

Occupational and environmental physicians are medical specialists within the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. Their primary role is to prevent injury and illness in the workplace through programs such as health surveillance and employment medicals.

However, when accidents occur, they are experts at helping you return to normal living and work. Phoenix Occupational Medicine is led by occupational and environmental physicians and is an accredited training site for doctors who want to specialise in occupational and environmental medicine.

Why You Might See a Doctor at Phoenix Occupational Medicine:

Pre-Employment Medical Assessment

Employers may request a pre-employment assessment to ensure you can safely perform the core tasks of the job. We understand this can feel daunting, but our team ensures your experience is as comfortable as possible. Some assessments may include an alcohol or drug screening test, conducted respectfully and privately.

What to wear: Wear comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement, such as a short-sleeved shirt and loose trousers.
What to bring: Photo ID, glasses (if you wear them), and any required scans or results mentioned in your booking confirmation.
Consent: Youā€™ll be asked to sign a consent form outlining the assessment process.
Where does my information go? Your health information is confidential. We only provide employers with the information necessary to keep you safe at work.

Health Surveillance

Our physicians are specifically trained to design and implement health surveillance programs (also known as health monitoring), ensuring workplace health and safety measures are working effectively to protect you. This isnā€™t about checking up on you but about ensuring your health is safeguarded.

Who pays for it? The Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBU) – often your employer – arranges and pays for health surveillance.
Consent: Youā€™ll sign a consent form outlining the process.
Where does my information go? The report is split into two sections: one for your employer and the other kept by the doctor. Itā€™s the PCBUā€™s responsibility to provide you with a copy of the report.

Telemedicine

We offer telemedicine services to give you quick access to an occupational doctor when you are ill or injured at work. Your employer will help arrange a telemedicine appointment, and the doctor will provide immediate advice on your work duties. Follow-up appointments or in-person visits can be arranged if necessary.

Does this replace my GP? No, our service complements your GP care, and with your consent, we can share information with your GP.
Can I get a WorkCover Certificate? Yes, our doctors can issue WorkCover Certificates when appropriate.

WorkCover Injury Management

Your GP may refer you to us for specialist management of workplace injury or illness. We specialise in helping people return to normal living and work. Referrals can happen at any stage in your recovery, and we strive to see you within a week for an assessment.

Why would your GP refer you to us?

If you have multiple health conditions alongside an injury, such as back pain and anxiety, or a shoulder injury and diabetes.
We use evidence-based musculoskeletal medicine.
We understand the risks posed by environmental hazards to human health.
We navigate the complexities of working with other specialists, insurers, employers, and allied health professionals to prioritise your care.

On The Right TrackĀ® Assessment

If your injury isnā€™t improving as expected, your GP may refer you for an On The Right TrackĀ® Assessment.

What to expect from the appointment:

An assessment of the injury cause and its impact on you.
Identification of any barriers to recovery.
A physical examination and a management plan.
Referrals for imaging, if required.

Comprehensive Care: Allied Health Support for Your Recovery

We work closely with allied health professionals, such as physiotherapists, to help you regain strength and fitness. If surgery is needed, we can arrange rapid referral to the right surgeon. We also keep your GP and return-to-work coordinator or insurer updated.
