Remote Injury Management for Distributed Australian Workforces

Phoenix’s Occupational and Environmental Physicians (OEPs) and occupationally trained doctors assess and manage workplace injuries by phone and video, from time-of-injury through to return-to-work, wherever the worker is based. Specialist occupational medicine, without the plane ride.

Who We Help

OEP-led remote injury management for every stakeholder on the ground

An injury on a regional site touches the worker, the supervisor, the employer’s RTW team, and the insurer, often all at once. Our remote service keeps the case moving for each of them.

Workers

An Occupational and Environmental Physician or occupationally trained doctor on the phone within minutes of reporting an injury. Clear guidance on what to do now, what you can safely do at work, and where to go for hands-on care if you need it.

Employers

Specialist occupational medicine delivered to the site, not a clinic. Same-day assessments, suitable duties written to the actual role, and documentation that holds up in every Australian workers compensation scheme.

Also supporting

Insurers: assessments and documented management plans from day one, regardless of worker location.

Local GPs Practitioners: occupational medicine input alongside hands-on care, with the OEP translating treatment into work and work into treatment.

RTW Coordinators: suitable duties built around inherent job requirements across multiple sites and multiple schemes.

What it is

What remote injury management actually is

Remote injury management is the application of occupational medicine to injuries that happen away from a clinic. Instead of requiring the worker to physically attend an occupational medicine clinic, the doctor comes to them, via telemedicine, within minutes of the injury being reported.

It is a clinical service delivered by occupational medicine doctors over phone or video, not a reporting tool, a triage app, or a substitute for emergency care. Burns, fractures, chest pain and electric shock go to hospital. Everything else, from musculoskeletal strains and soft-tissue injuries to contact dermatitis and upper respiratory complaints, can usually be managed from the site the worker is already on.

It typically covers the full arc of a workplace injury: initial assessment, treatment plan, coordination with local practitioners, ongoing return-to-work support, and certificates and reports as required.

Capabilities

What we deliver remotely, end-to-end

Phoenix’s remote injury management is built on two linked telemedicine services: Acute Telemedicine at time-of-injury, and RTW Telemedicine through the return-to-work phase. Together they cover everything occupational medicine can do without hands-on examination.

Acute assessment within minutes

Connect an injured worker with an Occupational and Environmental Physician or occupationally trained doctor within minutes of the injury being reported, 24/7. Triage, history, focused assessment, reassurance.

Treatment plan issued back to site

Written report to the employer’s health or HR team covering what the injury is, how to manage it safely, and what suitable duties (if any) the worker can do while recovering. Information is shared with consent of the worker.

Suitable duties built to the role

Restrictions written around inherent requirements of the actual job, not generic light-duties language. Specific limits on hours, lifting, climbing, driving, repetition.

RTW Telemedicine consultations

Bridges treating clearance and full Fitness-for-Duty. Reviews the clearance, role requirements and workplace context; issues clear advice on return, restrictions and residual risks.

Certificates of capacity via telehealth

Certificates of capacity and work capacity certificates issued electronically, valid in every Australian state and territory.

Referral to local hands-on care

Coordinated referrals to local GPs, physiotherapists and specialists where hands-on treatment or investigations are needed.

Employer Q&A per consultation

Up to three specific employer questions addressed per RTW Telemedicine consultation, keeping the case moving between formal reviews.

Case conferencing with the treating team

Multi-party calls with worker, GP, employer and insurer to unblock stalled cases across jurisdictional or logistical boundaries.

Industries We Serve

Where remote injury management earns its keep

Remote injury management is most valuable where the workforce is spread out, the work is physical, and the cost of a claim blowing out is significant.

01 / MINING & RESOURCES
Fly-in fly-out and regional sites

Quarries, exploration camps, processing plants, and remote operations where the nearest occupational physician is hours or a flight away.

02 / CONSTRUCTION & CIVIL
Linear projects and regional builds

Linear infrastructure, regional construction, remote maintenance, and multi-site civil contractors where crews move between sites.

03 / AGRICULTURE
Stations, orchards, primary industry

Stations, shearing, horticulture, aquaculture and abattoirs, where workers are hours from clinical support and certificate access is patchy.

04 / FREIGHT & TRANSPORT
Long-haul and regional depots

Long-haul drivers, regional freight depots, rail maintenance crews, and distributed transport operators where injury access equals downtime.

05 / REGIONAL HEALTH & AGED CARE
Remote-area and multi-site providers

Remote-area nurses, community workers, and multi-site aged care groups where shift coverage and staff continuity matter more than a city clinic visit.

06 / DISTRIBUTED CORPORATE
National workforces from one head office

State-wide retail chains, utilities, telecoms field crews, and contractors servicing metropolitan and regional sites from one head office, with one specialist service across every jurisdiction.

The Process

How remote injury management works, end-to-end

From time-of-injury through to sustainable return-to-work. Most acute cases move from site call to written plan inside a single shift.

01
Request

Supervisor calls Phoenix at time of injury. We triage the request and book an OEP or occupationally trained doctor the same or next business day. Emergency cases diverted to hospital; everything else moves straight into the acute consult.

02
Consult

Phone or video assessment with the worker: history, task breakdown, focused clinical assessment. Treatment plan and suitable duties framed against the actual role.

03
Report & refer

Written report to employer’s RTW team covering injury, management, suitable duties and review window. Local referrals arranged for hands-on treatment where needed.

04
Follow through

Scheduled RTW Telemedicine reviews, certificate renewals, and case conferences with the treating team until the worker is back at full capacity.

Suitability

When remote injury management is (and isn’t) the right tool

A remote consultation is the right tool for a lot of workplace injury situations. It isn’t the right tool for all of them.

  • Musculoskeletal strains, sprains and soft-tissue injuries
  • Aggravations of pre-existing conditions
  • Contact dermatitis and skin reactions
  • Upper respiratory complaints and non-acute illness presentations
  • Psychological injury triage and early intervention
  • Certificate of capacity renewals and suitable duties reviews
  • RTW planning for workers in regional or remote locations
  • Case conferences across multiple sites and jurisdictions
  • Burns, fractures, chest pain, electric shock: go to hospital
  • Acute injuries requiring hands-on examination or immediate imaging
  • Pre-employment medicals requiring physical measurements and audiometry
  • Drug and alcohol testing, health surveillance biological monitoring
  • Situations where the worker cannot safely access phone or video technology

Integration

From remote management into the Active Injury Management Service (AIMS)

For more complex cases, remote triage isn’t enough. That’s where AIMS comes in.

A 12-week, specialist-supervised recovery program

AIMS combines graduated exercise prescription (in partnership with Guardian Exercise Rehabilitation), integrated medical supervision, structured assessment, and standardised reporting. An acute remote consultation is often the front door to AIMS. We identify cases that will benefit from structured rehabilitation and move them straight in, regardless of location.
