Workplace Injury Management: Specialist-led, from First Notification to Return to Work

Phoenix designs and delivers end-to-end workplace injury management for Australian employers. Early intervention by an Occupational and Environmental Physician (OEP) or occupationally trained doctor, the 12-week Active Injury Management Service (AIMS), and return-to-work support: under one specialist team, in one record.

Who We Help

An injury management program built around the people who carry the case

Workplace injury management isn’t one decision; it’s dozens of them spread across the worker, the employer, the insurer and the treating GP. Our program is designed to keep those decisions aligned.

Employers

A specialist-led program that protects your return-to-work timeline: early intervention, structured recovery, review of suitable duties, and reporting that meets your compensable-injury obligations.

Workers

Care focused on getting you well and back to meaningful work. Specialist input, a clear recovery plan, and reporting written with both your health and your job in mind.

Also supporting

Insurers: specialist medical input on capacity, suitable duties, and stalled cases, on compensable-injury timelines.

General Practitioners: rapid specialist review, case conferencing, and shared management of complex claims.

Rehabilitation providers: coordinated medical oversight of allied health programs, including with Guardian Exercise Rehabilitation.

What it is

What workplace injury management actually involves

From an Occ Med perspective, the strongest predictor of how an injury claim resolves is what the employer does. According to Safe Work Australia’s 2025 National Return to Work Survey, how employers communicate with their injured workers and the care options they offer influence positive return-to-work outcomes. We help employers support injured workers both before they lodge a claim and after.

Workplace injury management is the end-to-end process of moving an injured worker from the moment of injury to a safe, durable return to work. It includes the early-intervention call, the medical assessment, the treatment and rehabilitation pathway, the workplace modifications, the certificate of capacity, the suitable duties plan, and the reporting that satisfies insurers and regulators.

Done well, injury management protects the worker from secondary disability, and gives the employer a defensible record of the decisions made. Done poorly, it stalls, and it may lengthen recovery and time to return to work.

Phoenix’s approach is specialist-led. An OEP designs the program, OEPs and occupationally trained doctors deliver the consultations, and AIMS provides the structured recovery pathway for the cases that need it.

Why Phoenix

Why specialist-led injury management produces better outcomes

Phoenix was founded by Occupational and Environmental Physicians who saw recoverable injuries becoming long-tail claims. They saw the need to educate employers on the benefits of early intervention, and to offer injured workers the right treatment at the right time. The program is built around that observation.

01 / OEP-LED
Occupational physicians, not generic injury managers

Our injury management program is designed and clinically governed by OEPs. Consultations are delivered by OEPs and occupationally trained doctors who work inside Australian compensable-injury systems every day.

02 / EARLY INTERVENTION
Early intervention matters most

How employers support their injured workers early and how they communicate with them influences positive outcomes. Phoenix holds capacity for same-day and next-day assessments specifically for new injuries, including via telehealth where appropriate.

03 / STRUCTURED
The 12-week AIMS recovery program

AIMS combines graduated exercise (with Guardian Exercise Rehabilitation), medical supervision, and standardised assessment in a single 12-week program. Designed for both acute injuries and cases where recovery has plateaued.

04 / COMPLIANT
Reporting that meets every Australian scheme

Certificates of capacity, review of suitable duties plans and case reports are structured to meet WorkCover QLD, icare (NSW), WorkSafe Victoria, ReturnToWorkSA and WorkCover WA requirements.

05 / SECURE
ISO 27001-certified information systems

Phoenix Occupational Medicine holds ISO 27001 information system certification. Worker health information is managed in a certified information security environment.

06 / NATIONAL
Specialist injury management, anywhere in Australia

Where in-person assessment is required we coordinate locally. Where telehealth is clinically appropriate, distance from a clinic is not a barrier to specialist oversight.

The Process

How a Phoenix injury management case runs

Four steps from notification to durable return to work. Most early-intervention cases are seen the same or next business day.

01
Notify

Employer, insurer, worker or treating GP contacts Phoenix with the injury details. We confirm an agreement of service with the employer (work type, suitable duties, payment) and triage the case.

02
Triage

Early intervention assessment by an OEP or occupationally trained doctor, delivered in person or via telehealth. Establishes diagnosis, work capacity, and the most appropriate next step.

03
Manage

A written injury management plan, including treatment pathway (AIMS where indicated), review of suitable duties, certificate of capacity and review milestones. Case conferencing if multiple stakeholders need to align.

04
Return

RTW Telemedicine clearance and suitable-duties planning when the worker is medically ready to return. Final report to the employer and insurer documenting the closure and any ongoing restrictions.

Suitability

Where Phoenix injury management adds the most value

An OEP-led injury management program is the right tool for many cases, but not all. We’re upfront about both.

  • Compensable musculoskeletal injuries needing structured recovery
  • Psychological injury where early specialist triage matters
  • Stalled or long-tail claims that need specialist re-assessment
  • Workers requiring review of suitable duties planning specific to their role
  • Non-work-related conditions where return-to-work safety is uncertain
  • Cases needing case conferencing across multiple stakeholders
  • Employers with distributed or regional workforces
  • Acute medical emergencies (call 000 first; we can pick up the case after)
  • Injuries that need primary diagnostic imaging or surgery (we coordinate around the treating team, not replace them)
  • Routine GP appointments where no specialist input is needed
  • Independent Medical Examinations

AIMS

The Active Injury Management Service: a 12-week structured recovery program

For musculoskeletal and psychological injuries that need more than a single consultation, AIMS provides the structure.

Graduated exercise, medical supervision, and standardised reporting under one roof

AIMS combines graduated exercise prescription (in partnership with Guardian Exercise Rehabilitation), integrated medical supervision by an OEP or occupationally trained doctor, and standardised assessment at initial contact, then at 6 and 12 weeks. It’s designed both for acute injuries and for cases where recovery has plateaued under previous treatment.
