Your WorkCover Doctor: Occupational Medicine Support for Your Injury

If you have been injured at work, you choose the doctor who treats you under your WorkCover claim. Phoenix’s Occupational and Environmental Physicians (OEPs) and occupationally trained doctors can be that doctor, or can support your GP with a specialist opinion. Delivered by telehealth, Australia-wide.

Who We Help

The choice of doctor is yours

Once a WorkCover claim is lodged, the injured worker decides who their treating doctor is. Your employer cannot choose for you. Phoenix becomes involved in one of two ways, and both start with you or your GP.

Workers

A doctor who understands work injury and your actual job, not just the diagnosis. Clear capacity, restrictions you can follow, and a path back to your role.

General Practitioners

Specialist occupational medicine opinion and management for a patient with a WorkCover or work-related condition. Refer directly, or include us in a case conference. We write back to you.

Also supporting

Employers: early intervention telemedicine on the day of injury, before any claim. If your worker later lodges a claim and chooses to stay with us, we continue as their treating doctor.

Insurers: treating doctor reports and review of suitable duties plans on claims where Phoenix is the treating doctor.

RTW coordinators: clear certificates of capacity that anchor the suitable duties plan you build.

What it is

How Phoenix becomes your WorkCover doctor

There are two pathways, and the choice sits with you, not your employer.

Through your employer’s early intervention telemedicine. Many employers give their workers access to a Phoenix doctor by telehealth on the day of an injury, before any claim exists. With your consent, the doctor sends your employer a Phoenix Injury Management Report setting out the context of the injury, the doctor’s opinion and any workplace factors. If you then decide to lodge a WorkCover claim, we can issue your certificate of capacity and continue as your treating doctor. You can equally choose your own GP, and many workers do, especially when we have seen them by telehealth from another state.

Through a referral from your GP. If your GP is managing your WorkCover injury, or a condition that is affecting your work, and wants an occupational medicine opinion, they can refer you to Phoenix in the same way they would refer to a cardiologist or an orthopaedic surgeon. We assess you, arrange any further investigations, recommend treatment and write back to your GP. Sometimes WorkCover approval is needed first.

What we cannot do is be chosen for you. Once a claim is lodged, an employer cannot make Phoenix, or any doctor, the treating doctor.

Capabilities

What a Phoenix doctor does as your WorkCover treating doctor

Once you have chosen Phoenix, or your GP has referred you, our doctors provide the medical parts a claim depends on.

Work injury assessment

An occupational medicine assessment of your injury against the actual demands of your role, at the time of injury or at any point a claim needs a fresh look.

Certificates of capacity

Issued electronically, with a clear diagnosis and framed around what you can safely do in your specific role.

Treating doctor reports

The reports your insurer needs from the treating doctor through the life of the claim.

Review of suitable duties plans

We review and approve the suitable duties your employer proposes, usually developed with an occupational therapist or physiotherapist, against your certificate. We do not write them.

Capacity and restriction reviews

Re-assessment of your capacity as you recover, so restrictions stay matched to your current ability.

Medical evidence review

Review of imaging, specialist reports and treating-doctor certificates against the real demands of your role.

Further investigations and treatment

Where needed we arrange imaging or tests and recommend treatment, as part of a GP referral or as your treating doctor.

Communication with your GP

Written correspondence with your GP on formal referral, or on request, to keep your care coordinated.

Case conferencing

Joining a case conference with your GP, employer, insurer or rehabilitation provider when a claim needs everyone aligned.

Why Phoenix

Where an occupational and environmental physician changes the outcome

For an uncomplicated injury, your GP is the right treating doctor. Where the medicine meets the work, occupational medicine input is what holds the recovery together.

01 / OEP-LED
Doctors trained in Occupational Medicine

Assessments are delivered by Occupational and Environmental Physicians (OEPs) and occupationally trained doctors who understand both the injury and the work it has to return to.

02 / ROLE-SPECIFIC
Restrictions anchored to the real job

Capacity and restrictions are framed against the inherent requirements of your actual role, so the suitable duties your employer proposes translate to the workplace rather than sitting unused.

03 / EVIDENCE-LED
Certificates completed properly

Every doctor uses the same WorkCover certificate. Ours are completed fully, with a clear diagnosis rather than a symptom and a focus on what you can do, consistent with the RACP’s Health Benefits of Good Work initiative.

04 / RAPID
Same- or next-day availability

Work injuries lose ground with every day they wait. Phoenix holds capacity for new-injury and review consultations, typically within one business day.

05 / SECURE
ISO 27001-certified information systems

Phoenix Occupational Medicine holds ISO 27001 information system certification. Worker health information is managed in a certified information security environment, with consent capture and documented appropriateness checks.

06 / NATIONAL
An occupational medicine doctor, anywhere in Australia

Phoenix’s Acute and RTW Telemedicine services are delivered by telehealth. A worker in a regional or remote location can see an OEP or occupationally trained doctor without travelling to a clinic.

The Process

How you come to Phoenix on a WorkCover claim

Two routes in, then the same careful process. Most consultations complete within one to two business days.

01
Start

Either a Phoenix doctor saw you through your employer’s telemedicine service and you chose to stay with us when you lodged your claim, or your GP refers you for an occupational medicine opinion. Sometimes WorkCover approval is needed before we can see you.

02
Consult

A telehealth consultation that reviews your medical evidence, clinical history, health status and the real demands of your role.

03
Report

A certificate of capacity issued electronically, plus treating doctor reports for the insurer, or a written opinion back to your GP. If your employer proposes suitable duties, we review and approve them against your certificate.

Suitability

When you need an occupational medicine doctor, and when your GP is enough

Occupational medicine input is not required for every claim. We are clear about where it adds value and where your GP is the right person.

  • Complex injuries: multiple body parts, comorbidities, secondary psychological injury
  • Stalled claims where recovery or return to work is not progressing
  • Technically demanding or safety-critical roles where generic restrictions do not translate
  • Recoveries where you keep being signed off rather than supported back to modified work
  • Suspected workplace exposures, or conditions where the link between work and illness needs a specialist view
  • Uncomplicated soft-tissue injuries with a clear diagnosis
  • A straightforward suitable-duties match, where the role is generic
  • Single body part, single condition, expected to resolve within weeks
  • Recovery is on track and your certificate is updated as you improve

Where It Sits

The WorkCover consult inside Phoenix’s wider injury program

Phoenix’s involvement can be a one-off opinion for your GP, or ongoing care as your treating doctor through a claim.

One team from injury to return to work

Where a Phoenix doctor assessed you at the time of injury the same doctor can often review you through recovery and support the return-to-work plan. Medical context and role understanding follow you, instead of being lost between providers. Out-of-hours consultations may be with another Phoenix doctor.
